Jill Whitall, Ph.D. Professor of Motor Control and Development Department of Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation Science Affiliate Professor of Gerontology; Neuroscience Program University of Maryland, Baltimore Jill Whitall received a B.Ed. from Keele University (UK), an M.A. from the University of London (UK) and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, Baltimore. Dr. Whitall studies motor development at both ends of the lifespan. Her research activities with aging include NIA, NIDDR and VA funded projects that investigate a novel stroke rehabilitation protocol (BATRAC or Bilateral Arm Training with Rhythmic Auditory Cueing). She is the Project Leader of an Intervention Development Study that is one of two development studies in the Claude Pepper Older Americans Independence Center at the University. This study is a randomized control trial comparing BATRAC with dose-matched therapeutic exercises. A major focus is on determining the underlying mechanisms of recovery through neuroimaging and stimulation techniques in collaboration with Drs. Andreas Luft & Daniel Hanley. Dr. Whitall is a Co-Investigator on a VA funded grant (Chris Bever, PI) also looking at stroke rehabilitation but using a robotic device. She is about to start a study on comparing bilateral training with unilateral training on the same BATRAC machine in order to determine whether the bilateral nature of this protocol is important or whether other aspects of the training such as repetition or the cueing are more essential. In particular, she is interested in optimizing training procedures to patient profiles. Dr. Whitall has authored or co-authored over 50 published articles and book chapters. |
