John G. Schumacher, Ph.D.John Schumacher received a B.S. in Chemistry from John Carroll University, an M.A. in Applied Ethics from Bowling Green State University, and both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Case Western Reserve University.

As a medical sociologist specializing in social gerontology, Dr. Schumacher’s research has focused on physician-patient relationships across a range of settings including hospital emergency departments, physician offices, and assisted living facilities/long-term care.  In addition, he conducts research into older adult cancer survivors, successful aging, biomedical ethics, and dementia care.  Dr. Schumacher is a collaborator on the Collaborative Studies of Long-Term Care (CS-LTC) with Drs. Eckert, Morgan, Zimmerman and Sloane.  Currently, Dr. Schumacher’s NIA funded research is exploring the role of physicians and nurse practitioners in the delivery of health care to residents of assisted living communities.
