Mona Baumgarten, Ph.D. Associate Professor Division of Gerontology Department Of Epidemiology And Preventive Medicine University of Maryland School of Medicine Mona Baumgarten received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She was Assistant Professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at the University of Montreal for two years, and in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania for five years, before becoming Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at the University of Maryland, Baltimore in 1998.
Dr. Baumgarten’s major research interest is in the epidemiology of aging. Before leaving Canada to move to the U.S., most of her work was on the epidemiology of dementia. Recently, Dr. Baumgarten’s research interests have expanded to include the etiology of pressure ulcers. She has received two R01 grants and one R21 grant from the National Institute on Aging and the National Institute on Arthritis Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases to study pressure ulcers in elderly hospital patients. Dr. Baumgarten has also conducted studies on risk factors for incontinence among elderly women undergoing hip surgery; risk factors for hospital-acquired pressure ulcers; racial differences in the incidence of pressure ulcers; and the frequency and correlates of pressure ulcers among residents newly admitted to nursing homes. Dr. Baumgarten is a coursemaster for Principles of Epidemiology (PREV 600), the introductory epidemiology course offered in the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine. The objective of the course is to introduce the students to the concepts, methods, and applications of epidemiology. She has had extensive experience in mentoring trainees in multiple areas, with an emphasis on research methodology. |
